Chapter Seven

Lucy cast a covert look around, relieved to see that everyone else was too busy enjoying their lunch and the break to pay them any attention.

“That night in your kitchen just watching the delight you took in eating chocolate cake aroused me,” he said, his smile growing as her eyes widened in shock. “The anticipation in your eyes, the way your tongue flicked out to catch a dab of chocolate on your lip. Now I’m aroused when you walk into a room, when I smell that fragrance you wear.”

He grinned. “Most especially when you kiss me like you did this morning.” He was pleased when her mouth fell open and her surprise and embarrassment registered as a blush. Finally he had her flustered, speechless. He also had her full attention and didn’t intend to waste it. “I want to kiss you all over,” he told her, his words as bold and deliberate as the look he gave her. “I want to start at the back of your neck and kiss my way down to your feet. Then I want to turn you over and kiss my way back up, tasting you, touching you.”

Lucy felt his words like the blast of a hot furnace. “McKinley, please.”

“Oh, I want to please you, Lucy,” he replied, his voice husky with intent as he purposely misunderstood her plea. “And I’ll take my time doing it.” He put his plate on the bed of the truck between them and cupped her chin with his hand, forcing her to meet his gaze.

“I have to set a good example for the kids,” she said, clutching at any straw to postpone this most intimate conversation.

He smiled. “I wasn’t suggesting I jump you on the couch one night in full view of them. But give them some credit. Katie’s already guessed that I like you.”

Lucy looked aghast. “She what?”

“She asked me not to hurt you. I promised her I wouldn’t.” He nudged her gently, his elbow brushing her ribs. “Come out with me tonight, Lucy.”

“Tonight?”

“I’m sure Thomas wouldn’t mind baby-sitting. Or in a pinch we could get Shay to stay with the kids.”

Lucy bit her bottom lip, wondering if there was any obstacle this man didn’t just blast out of his path. “Thomas can handle it,” she assured him. “I just don’t want them to get the wrong idea.”

“About us?”

She nodded. “Stability is something they need in their lives.”

Clayton placed his knuckles beneath her chin and turned her face to his. “Us going out won’t traumatize them, Lucy,” he said, his eyes locked with hers. “I guarantee you’ll have fun.”

He left her sitting there as he ditched his empty plastic plate into a garbage bag and went back to work.

Five minutes later everyone was toiling once again. The next time she saw him, he had his shirt off. Other men had discarded their shirts as well but he was the only man she had eyes for. He really was beautifully built, exuding a strength that went beyond the physical, a sense that he could accomplish anything he wanted to.
